Science Statement of Intent

At St Minver, we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and we intend to deliver a science curriculum that enables the children to develop and broaden their scientific view of the world around them. Our science education will develop each child’s natural curiosity, encourage their respect for living organisms and the physical environment and provide opportunities for them to take part in critical evaluation of evidence. They will be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

The children will develop their scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. We intend that the children will take part in driving their own learning by asking their own questions about what they observe and making decisions about which types of scientific enquiry are likely to be the best way of answering these questions. Therefore, the children at St Minver will be continually enhancing their scientific skills of enquiry by observing changes over time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out fair tests and finding things out using secondary sources of information.

The National Curriculum will provide a structure and skill development for the science curriculum being taught throughout the school. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, our pupils will be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
