Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you’ve all had a lovely half term break and enjoyed the gorgeous, sunny weather. I can’t believe we are entering the children’s final half term in Year 2. Where has that time flown by?
The children have really enjoyed finding out why castles were first built in England and have produced some fantastic leaflets all about them. We had lots of fun exploring the remains of a Motte and Bailey Castle when we visited Restormel Castle at the end of last half term. It was great to experience first hand the different features of a castle and although it was a little scary whilst walking along the battlements, the views surrounding the castle were amazing!
We begin this half term by writing our own poems about castles before shifting our focus towards dragons and exploring the question ‘Do dragons really exist and if they do how many different types of dragons are there?’ We will spend some time looking at the book ‘Tell Me A Dragon’ by Jackie Morris which describes the beautifully illustrated dragons inside her book. We will also be thinking about ‘real life’ dragons around the world. If you have any books at home linked to our topic we would love you to send them in so that we can share them with the class. We promise to take good care of them until the end of term.
Thank you very much for the lovely baby and toddler photos you sent in of your child to support our science topic ‘Animals, including humans’. The children had great fun playing guess who and trying to work out which baby photo belonged to who as we thought about the changes that take place as we grow older.
I hope you find the following information useful, and it gives you an insight into the teaching and learning that will take place in Year 2 during the Summer Term (although I’m sure some things will change as we go along). This half term we will spend our story time sessions listening to ‘The Boy Who Grew Dragons’ by Andy Shepherd.
Here is an outline of the things that happen every week:
Monday - Homework and spellings are given out. Visit to the library to choose a new book.
Wednesday - PE with Mr Rickard and music with Mrs Couch.
Friday - Active mile, spelling test, maths homework returned. PE with Mrs Cudmore.
Please can the children bring in a named water bottle each day. Please remember to send your child's PE kit into school in a named carrier bag ready for their PE lessons on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon. Don’t forget to send your child to school wearing their trainers and jogging bottoms on a Friday ready for our active mile in the morning.
Termly Challenge Each term we would like the children to contribute towards the class topic. This term we would like the children to use recycled materials to make either a castle or dragon. We have been so impressed with the wonderful castles that the children have made at home so far and hope they enjoyed the challenge. If your child would like to take part in this term’s challenge then there is still plenty of time to do so. Please just send in your child’s castle or dragon once they have finished making it. Thank you!
We hope you will find this information useful. If you have any further questions or queries then please don’t hesitate to ask.
We look forward to a happy and enjoyable year in Year 2!
Thank you for your support.
With very best wishes,
Mrs Cudmore (Class Teacher)
Mrs Mably (Teaching Assistant)
