Writing

At St Minver School, we follow a carefully sequenced Writing Journey from the Early Years through to Key Stage 2, ensuring every child becomes a confident, articulate and capable writer. Children begin with rich, playful mark‑making experiences and oral storytelling, gradually building the motor skills, vocabulary and sentence awareness needed for writing. As pupils move through the school, they are immersed in high‑quality texts, explore the features of different genres, and learn how authors craft language for purpose and audience. We also use Grammarsaurus to provide clear, child‑friendly models, scaffolds and grammar guidance, helping pupils understand what good writing looks like and how to achieve it.

To support this journey, we teach handwriting through the Morrells Handwriting approach, which prioritises correct letter formation, fluency and confidence. Children begin with developmentally appropriate, play‑based activities that strengthen core, shoulder and fine‑motor control before learning printed letter families in a structured sequence. As they progress, pupils develop automaticity, joined handwriting (when ready), and the stamina needed for longer pieces of writing. Consistent modelling, high expectations and regular practice ensure that all pupils can present their ideas clearly, legibly and with pride — enabling handwriting to support, rather than hinder, their development as writers.
